This has been a standard feature in Japanese-market phones for
some time now, and Nokia also has decent support for it. It's about
time it finally became popularized in western markets. Hell, many
Japanese business cards even have QR Codes printed on the back of
them now...
I know that I do it on my website, and it will be on v2.0 of my
business cards (linking to a vCard of the business card info no
less). I really wish QR codes were used more. Tons of uses too.
My bet is that even before bar-code links take off properly,
they'll be superceded by systems like nokia's
point & find (pdf warning) that use SIFT to turn any unique
image into a unique descriptor, and match those to corresponding
hyperlinks. Why add a barcode to a graphic advert when you can just
"recognize" the graphic :)
When in Japan I was shocked with ubiquity of the QR-Codes...
almost every print ad had one of these barcodes... even the
stoplights and bins on the street have barcodes to enable people
access location centered info (hospitals, metro, train, etc...)
Why add a barcode to a graphic advert when you can just
"recognize" the graphic :)
Maybe usabilty?. Humans have been trained to mentally scan
products searching for a "barcode thing". Barcodes have an iconic
status in universal culture, that would be hard to reproduce in a
"regular" image.

Google is trying to put this in every Android device too: http://code.google.com/p/zxing/

I'm not Japanese, but mine has a QR code to S-G on the back of it. :)

What is the best place/tool to generate QR Code images? Be nice if there was a plugin for Photoshop.

nokia's tool: http://mobilecodes.nokia.com/create.jsp?...

Kayawa and i-nigma also work (across more than just Nokia devices too).

Dsample (I think) has a FF plugin, too, that creates one while you're browsing. I've used it more than once for tons of stuff.

If @dsample could allow you to save the Barcode it would be brilliant

Some more code creators to look at http://activeprint.org/codes.php (cool datamatrix looks good), http://www.neoreader.com/code.html, http://pukupi.com/tools/codeatron/ (with Japanese standards), http://www.nttdocomo.com/technologies/pr... an application which is quite flexible and http://qrcode.kaywa.com/. There are some others, sorry about the long URLs but in a hurry.

Plan to put these plus many readers and other things on my website project which I've been extremely lazy with at the moment.

Thanks for the links. There's also the Google experiment with QR codes in print ads: http://www.google.com/adwords/printads/a...
For the record, I keep being amazed by the quality of the conversation here.
