lots of people hanging around random clubs last night at 0220 when i was going home. seen it before in ireland, its a bizarre experience - to be in a bar with friends - and to look around and realise that a quarter of the people in the bar are standing outside smoking - their tables left empty for a while...
It's like house parties where they ask not to smoke and most of the interesting people hang around on the balcony... we're smoking our lungs off waiting for the ban in London in July ;)
I visited New York a few years ago. There was a deadly double-effect of smoking ban and some idiotic "cabaree law" reintroduced from 30s that didn't allow dancing in smaller places (unless they pay some ridiculous large fee)
It was January. Dancing floors were surrounded by yellow-black tapes and all people were outside smoking. Let's party.
yeah, sounds like fun. i don't know how my local pub is going to look like after this. clubs are less screwed but not being allowed to smoke while having your pint... talking about nanny state
I'd also say it's gonna be a no-issue in no time. People (read: smokers) who've been exposed to more strict laws tend to return to Europe and can't stand smoky bars/clubs anymore. In 20 years it will seem as bizarre that you ever could smoke with non-smokers around as smoking on subway-trains in the past seems now.

Odds are it'll fade into a non-issue, like the time smoking was banned on airplanes...

They tried to do the cabaret law thing in Seattle in the 90s. It didn't last long.

Generally, watching the nannystaters battle the allcoolpeoplesmoke crowd is fun for someone who really doesn't care one way or the other:-)

You never see Jack Bauer smoke. I'm trying to be a good role model.

If I ever do, I'll torture you! I got more torture than the Chinese got sweatshops!

Don't mention the Chinese. They really know how to torture me, but they got nothing from me.
