The only obstacle is entering the wifi network password (once). After that the Skypephones are brilliant. On warning though - she will call you alot ;-)
My parents have an extra one I bought them when they still had a PC. Now bought them a Mac so I don't have to fight with the PC every time I visit home. If your Mom has a PC I'd be happy to give you the Skype phone.
I got the Asus AiGuru SV1 Videophone over the weekend and love it.... when it's working. Unfortunately I think it will require a firmware update in order to maintain a reliable wifi connection. I haven't used it just for audio calls but the video calls are really very good quality.
@jyri I would agree with @topgold. Get a PC-less Skype phone. If she is only every going to use Skype (and not another SIP device) then something like this http://dualphone.net/
Saves all the "are you sure the computer is turned on?" questions.
After watching Loic's video I'm compelled to get an AiGuru for us and another for my mom. But it'd be good to know if @EirePreneur's experience with it dropping off WiFi is a common problem

Works fine, but I have the old Netgear ones that do not have chat. How old is she?

She's just over 60. All that's needed is zero-config voice.

I've been looking at these two desktop models: http://snipr.com/6plss & http://snipr.com/6pm79. Both work without a computer (direct Ethernet connection + screen) but don't have video chat like the ASUS AiGuru SV1, http://snipr.com/6pmdj

We stand by a DECT Skype phone. No computer required. You can toggle to landline or Skype. A meager ADSL connection works well. http://www.insideview.ie/photos/sightings/dualphone_3088.html

@villevesterinen thanks for the offer, my Mom's on a Mac - and I'm after a computer-less handset
