i knew it, i knew Google hired the Jaiku team for the engineering/thinking talent rather than the actual Jaiku product/service/community. sad to hear, but then again good to see GOOG is working toward openness.

"Google isn't staffing up Jaiku.com. But we love the product and plan to open up its development to the user community more in the future." SIGH...

@jyri thanks for the update, and the comment at the end just reminded me of one possible reason for why there has not been so much information flowing out about Jaiku.

small children do seem to take just about every single second for free time :)

@jyri: I never knew you had a blog? Looking forward to the new year and hopefully Jaiku going forward :)

Had to read the post several times and I still think there's a lot between the lines we get to understand only later. "you can bet your Android that there are completely new Wow!'s in store."

I'm not feeling it either unfortunately ... it's been way too static here. Appreciate the part-time details that's helpful for perspective. At least the community is still relatively solid, but the relevance of Jaiku has really faltered ... no direct presence in the Android launch which seemed like a logical point.

well, it's all been said before. don't think there's much point in discussing 'where is this all going' theme again. it's fun as it is, but i doubt there's anything in store for jaiku users

...especially that Jyri writes 'we' about google, and not about jaiku.

@overpills You've invested a lot of time and energy in cultivating a community on Jaiku. I fully understand your disappointment over my confirmation of what has been evident from the get-go: that Google isn't throwing lots of resources into this incarnation of the service. That said, we want Jaiku to talk to other services, enable active users to develop features, and hopefully have many Jaikus in the future. So the future may not be so bleak. We're working as hard as we can now with the resources available to us to move jaiku.com to a more stable platform. Once we're there, it's a good time to re-evaluate the situation.

@jyri: Will you embrace the OpenMicroblogging protocol standard like Identi.ca to enable cross subscription etc? This could be important

    +1 to dantheman's question.

Thanks for the update, and for being as open as you can about the state of things for Jaiku.

I would have liked to see jaiku's tech a bit more apparent inside of Android, but that seems to be something that's coming, moreso than something that was planned. Building the backend to that "social profile" is very interesting given Google's ability to spot individual user trends, give targeted advertising, and value-enough type services. I would assume that Address Book 2.0 is pretty much the next iteration of Jaiku+GoogAPI.

Congrats also on the time you now how to sit and reflect some. Many people have a bit of time doing that, and it seems that you've taken the initiative on your end and making sure that you can reflect, as well as move forward. That's a very healthy way to live these days.

Cross-subscription won't be a part of the App Engine release, but some of the technologies it requires will, such as OAuth and support for foreign friends. We're working towards a state of affairs where lot of these decisions will be made more by the community than by us here at Google.

Sounded like bad news that Jaiku really just is a 20% project. But then again, it could take off just as well, if it is on scalable infrastructure. Twitter isn't popular because of ads or anything like that. All word of mouth. Jaiku is already a better product. If it is solid and scalable, and you then come out with just one or two really cool things that gets the viral thing going, it could still explode. But it doesn't sound like you're too concerned about whether it does or not? And 'many Jaikus', hm, sounds like you might have something up your sleeve that we don't know about.

@jyri, Thank you for the communication through your blog. The worst part of late had been the deafening silence & the feeds not working. Now that the silence has been broken and the feeds are working again, I am feeling the Jaiku love all over again!

As I see it, if the Jaiku team gets the Jaiku move over & then gets a couple of "WOW's" out the door, then it will be up to the Communityku to move Jaiku from a 20% to a 100% Project. Go Team!

there were lots of users here, playing Dev... but I guess most of them left this boat.

I sure hope for better times and OMB.
